Norm Feuti (of the awesome comic Retail) and his lovely wife Jen sent me this Poncho sighting in an issue of Disney Family Fun magazine.  One of the kids crafts in the issue used newspapers and Poncho made a tiny cameo.  Look closely!

Funny?  No?  Ahh, whadda they know.

Brad Bender sent in this picture of some familiar looking pups.  Seems ‘Poncho’ is already getting grief over his world domination speech!

Here’s a strip from ‘07 that seems a little apropos  of the current storyline.  I have a feeling Poncho had a similar flashback in one of the early years, but I can’t quite recall or find it.  Clearly delusions of grandeur are in the blood.

Kelly, Joe & Hannah Aldrich sent me an embroidered version of Poncho.  As self-proclaimed ‘huge fans’ I hope they’ve stitched this onto every article of clothing in the house!

Long-time fan, Dollysmaid, had a few fun-filled days with Poncho in sunny California and sent in these great shots of the little scamp enjoying:  California Adventure; Knott’s Berry Farm; the Mecca of all theme parks Disneyland!; contemplating life looking out into the Pacific Ocean at Laguna Beach; and checking in at the former Tustin Marine Corps Air Station - the world’s largest free standing concrete structure and home to the Good Year and Fuji blimps.

Way back in May ‘07, I dipped my toe just slightly further into the tech age and began lettering my strips using a typeface created for me (from my own lettering) by my good friend Johnny Martz.   Below was one of the last strips lettered by hand:

This has proved to be a wonderful aid when altering dialogue, fixing typos, etc.  The only downside is that when I sell originals I must now pull out the old lettering pen and exercise the tiny hand lettering muscles.  Why am I mentioning all this?

Well, I have quite a few original strips from back in the before-before time of hand lettering, and since they’re much easier to prepare, I thought I’d declare a summer sale!  All daily strips dating from May ‘07 and earlier are on sale for $60 each, (or $50 for multiple orders), until further notice.  You can peruse archives of early Pooches at Universal Reprints, or at GoComics of course if you’re signed up there, or look through any of the three books.  If you find any you like, just click the “Email Paul” link on the top left and let me know the date/s you’re interested in.

Great image sent in my one of my biggest fans, Wendy Loreti.  It appears that no sooner did her very own Poncho plush arrive at her door than he was stirring up trouble.

Ryan Ogilvie sent in this shot of Poncho rallying the other plushies in the house to ambush Chewy the cat.  Good to see Chewy knows when he’s been beaten!

While in New York last month attending the Reubens Leif and I hung out quite a bit.  After I split Leif got to fullfill a huge birthday wish: having lunch with three of his illustration heroes from yesteryear at none other than the Society of Illustrators.  He talks about the experience here.

Mueck creates hyper-realistic human sculptures (he has a background in film effects) done on an unnatural scale.  Tiny old folks, over-sized infants, giant heads, but all so realistic that when you stare into their eyes you expect them to start speaking.  It’s an unnerving but exciting experience to be around his work.

This one piece in particular (pictured above) called Mask was meant to convey the perspective a baby might have when its father peeked into its crib, imagining that this huge strange head might be quite disconcerting to a newborn.

His work is fascinating.  You can see more of his art here or check out an amazing YouTube video about it here.

Becky Flarity shared her family farm and the town of Buckley with Poncho recently.  Here he is sizing up one of the bulls; taking in some culture; whetting his appetite at the Choppe House; and impersonating Tom Cruise in Top Gun at the Museum of Flight.

The Pooch Ringtales animations have started up on YouTube.  Just a few to start, but they’ll all be there eventually.  Finally, Poncho, Kim Kardashian, and that kid with the light saber in his garage are all together in one place.

Sometimes I just really enjoy drawing the little guy.  Other times (say, from below, or when he’s trying to lift a watermelon over his head) it’s not quite as fluid an experience, but for some reason disgruntlement just flows from the pen.

Hee hee, today’s Guest Art  of Boomer and B-ball Poncho comes from a young tyke named Arnold.   I think Boomer is open.

Just a little note about Travelling Poncho, in case you thought we’d forgotten all about the little tyke.  We ain”t.  We’ve just had an unfortunate run of hosts hang onto him for long periods of time and then not send any pics.  Or perhaps he misbehaved… stained the rug, cleaned out their bank accounts… but that’s not his fault, it’s just natural dog behaviour.  Hopefully we’ll get him back on track again and get some new shots posted from those still willing to take a chance and let him into their homes.

And anyone who’s got a funny shot or two of their own personal Poncho plush should feel free to send them along as well.
