Poncho’s Travels!

LOUISVILLE, KY

Poncho does Louisville, courtesy of Cheryle Miles.  Here he is at the famous Churchill Downs Horse Track; up close at the Paddock enjoying some french fries; the famous finish line; sizing up a bat at the Louisville Slugger Museum; and introducing himself to a bronze stallion.  Cheers, Cheryle!

Advance Panel

Here’s a panel from the upcoming storyline.  Pooch Cafe has finished with the “whodunnit” genre for the moment and entered “war drama” (or the more rare genre “war comedy.”)

Looks a little Poncho-y, I do admit, Leanner…

Ginger Meggs Meets Poncho (and a big batch of the comics page’s finest)

gin090719.gif

While hiding away from the Canadian winter last year in glorious Melbourne Australia, Alex Hallatt (Arctic Circle) introduced me to the latest cartoonist to take over Australia’s longest running comic strip, Ginger Meggs.  The talented and quite hilarious young man’s name is Jason Chatfield, and we palled around at the Reuben Awards last year in Los Angeles where barrels of fun were had by all.  I also learned that the Aussies pronounce “Ginger” with two hard “G”s, (like “Winger”).

It seems that young master Chatfield’s American experience has now been brought into the pages of his comic strip, as we see the titular bright-eyed and fresh-faced character soaking up the culture of the land (the biggest panel, naturally, being dedicated to sitting in a taxi in an L.A. traffic jam).  I was tickled to see Poncho amongst an upper-crust selection of classic comics icons in the final panel.  Thanks for the wave, Jason!

I also notice another propagation of the myth that toilet water spins in the opposite direction in alternate hemispheres.  As far as I can tell this started as a gag in a Simpson’s episode, (the American consulate has a machine that turns the water back “the proper, American way,” and Homer, tear in his eye, salutes the toilet as it flushes and sings “sweet land of liberty”).  The idea is given credence by a meteorological force called the “Coriolis effect”, which makes it sound scientific and therefore plausible, but this effect only has an observable influence on vortexes the size of hurricanes.  I had this debate about a half dozen times whilst down in Oz, (usually culminating with a group march to the can to watch a toilet do its thing.)  For some reason toilet performance is fun to debate.  An article on the subject can be read here.

Guest Drawing

poncho-lulu.jpg

And speaking of Pooch uber-bloggers, one of our all-time favorites, Lulu (aka “Archie”), has finally decided to take a guest-drawing stab at the P-dog.  She has stated several times that she is amazed by how I draw the ears, but considering I’ve drawn them about 8800 times and she’s drawn them twice, I think she did a great job.  In fact, they have sort of flamey side-of-an-80’s van flavor to me.  I dig the tat, too.

Mooch Trek

Here’s another movie poster created by Shane Davis, the ultra-blogger who brought us such  photo treats as “Before and After“, and “Tattoo“, and of course Poncho’s brilliant trip to Austin, Texas (viewable in the Poncho’s Travels gallery).   Shane says “I saw the  poster based on Backdraft.  Well, I couldn’t resist!  I had to do one, too.  It is based upon a very recent reboot of a very popular franchise.”  Indeed, I do believe that T-bone steak probably represents the final frontier for dogs.

And Break-In part deux

Break Ins

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

The current storyline provoked some readers to recall burglary transpirings of the past in the Pooch universe.  I only recall one myself, (although that doesn’t mean there weren’t two….I once did the exact same Sunday twice in a six month period, forgetting I’d already done it).  Here is part one of the break-in I do remember…

Taken Literally

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Roger Smith sent in this photo taken at a Taste of China buffet in San Marcos, TX.  Odd thing to have on a Chinese menu but great to see Poncho’s catch-phrase transcending cultures…and meaning!

Poochergeist

Here’s an upcoming side panel for a Pooch Sunday, another in the growing list of classic movie posters that I’ve Pooch-ified.   I remember this movie scaring the pants off me as a kid; that clown under the bed wigged me out permanently.  Then again I was a tad jumpy as a lad.  And things ain’t changed all that much.

Lego Poncho

poncholego-john.png

Now this is sweet, combining my favorite creation with the childhood toy that stimulated my imagination to the point where creating that self-same creation was possible.  Or something.   I literally spent hundreds of hours with my giant box of legos, foregoing math and social skills in lieu of space-age adventures and giant robots.  Ah, those were the days. This Lego Poncho was designed with “Lego Digital Designer” by John Reiher.  Thanks for making my day, John!

On The Subject Of Firemen…

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Here are a few other strips involving Carmen’s attention diverting occupation.

On the subject of lack of posting over the last 5 days….

What, who brought that up?  Um, I got a new Iphone, I’ve been playing with that.  That’s my excuse and I’m stickin’ to it.

Another Strip Requiring Elucidation

pooch0831-photo.jpg

On the heels of last week’s post clarifying the “Lake Of Fire” response, I thought I’d bring this one up, since a few posts regarding it made me think my full intention did not quite come across.  In some earlier strips it has been revealed the Carmen, aside from a little crush on Justin Timberlake, has a common-variety fireman fetish (I had read that fireman was rated the number one “sexiest profession”  by polled women, although that could be dated information following more closely after 911).  Here, Poncho decides to do something “nice” for Carmen (which is still a little outside of his standard parameters, so good on him for that) by bringing some local fire-dudes into her vicinity.  The hearts dancing about her face I think got mistaken for gratitude, when in fact they represented a bit of lust.  The true meaning was not lost on Chazz, who is none-too-pleased with Poncho’s birthday gift.
