A Poochiversary
By Paul | October 5, 2009
For the past year now I’ve been using a virtual assistant. No, that’s not a computer app, or holographic projection that at first seems sexy but then goes awry and threatens Al Pacino or Tom Cruise or myself, it’s an actual guy, although I’ve never met him. Dave Coates is his name, and he helps put the finishing touches on the Pooch strips, leaving me with more time to plot world domination and battle inner demons and make omelets. Our relationship just turned one year old – the paper anniversary, as Dave reminds me – and to commemorate it he has sent the art below. Thanks Dave, for this, for your help, and for being a hilarious, talented, and top-knotch guy. Here’s to many more.

And big thanks to Dave for helping keep the Pooch universe up and running!
I know you guys are probably planning the whole candle-light dinner with the chocolate-covered strawberries and belinis to celebrate!
Great drawing Dave!
Cheers!

Congratulations! Dave, good to know you’re not a threatening hologram. That could have serious consequences.
Delightful drawing too!!

Congrats, Dave! You are obviously, very talented and a great compliment (foil?) to Paul. How is it that you’ve never met? Are you far away from Paul? (Of course he is far away, being in Canada which I can’t even find on the map.
) Hope you can get together to celebrate something. I agree with Rogbo . . .great strip . . . we welcome world domination from such talented people. Narf!

*clinks* To Paul and Dave…
May your virtual relationship only grow and thrive over the years.
And many thanks to Dave, who adds some awesomeness to the awesome Pooch Cafe.
I LOVE Poncho and his battle with the delectable dessert above. I’m guessing he loved every minute of it, until that last bite when he realized he went one too far. Been there…but not with cake

Congrats Dave and Paul. I recognize Dave’s name from the catapult illustration he did. Being a virtual assistant, do you get paid with virtual money?

Great picture of Poncho with the cake…haven’t we all been there?
Interesting about your virtual assistant: would be nice to know more about him….what he exactly does to help you….and how do you guys work together sight unseen…do you speak on the phone, or via email? Maybe a photo….interesting he is so involved with us and we are just learning about his existence…a real story here I think….some details…a bio, resume, etc. Does he do anything else other than Poncho that we might have seen, much like all the things that Paul does other than Pooch Cafe…write in Dave and let us know something about you…welcome

Hey everybody, Dave here. Thanks very much for all the kind words.
I arrived at my current position within the Pooch Empire when I took my family’s only milk cow to market, and ended up trading her for three magic beans. Ma and Pa were pretty upset, but their moods lightened considerably after the beans took root outside the kitchen window and a job sprang up and flowered out of land that for many months had been stubbornly barren.
As for my duties… I’m mainly a facilitator, and if I’ve done my job right, there’s no indication that I’ve had my grubby mitts on things at any point in the process. I’d describe it further, but honestly, I’m not really sure what it is I do, exactly. I think something involving sabotaging the “Garfield” home office. Also, this is the only opportunity I’ve ever had to appear mysterious, so I’m grabbing it, lustily.
And for NinaGeeka, who wanted a photo, here’s my first attempt at embedding one. (I’m not on Facebook or anything similarly-”social,” so a self-portrait will have to suffice until I figure out how to get this lens cap off my cell phone’s camera.
Ready? Hope this works…

So there’s that: a moderately outdated drawing (add stubble and slightly better coloration) or a bunch of incomprehensible text.
Thanks again for all the thoughtful sentiments, everyone. I feel really lucky to be (small) part of something as tremendously great as Pooch Cafe, and will hang around for as long as Paul will have me (the distance between us probably works in my favor).

Reminds me of when Poncho was left with a giant bag of kibble overnight… hilarious.
Congrats, as others have said, hopefully many more anniversaries to come.
