My apologies for the long gap in posts about the Pooch Café movie.  Things have been moving slowly, but moving nicely.  I was hard at work since last spring (!) on the treatment.   The producer – an 800 pound Hollywood gorilla with an epic track record (“he’s so hot right now”) – was a tough taskmaster, but we formed a little mutual-admiration club of two, and produced a story that seems to hit all the right marks.

I then spent the last few months doing a first draft of the screenplay.  To say it was a joy is an understatement.  I plunged myself into it.  Gone were the sensations of hunger, thirst, the need to pee; I think I kept inhaling and exhaling but who the hell knows.  Big thanks to my girlfriend for handling the X-mas list.  And feeding me.

By New Years I had a completed first draft.  And I’m delighted to report that it was met with big enthusiasm from the Sony team.

Next up: another experienced writer is being brought in to work on it some more.  They’ve got some good talent in mind, and Sony seems quite keen on keeping the Pooch vision we’re all enjoying, so I’m very much looking forward to more creative input and watching it continue to evolve.   More to come.

Great news, Paul! You can blow us off anytime if it means you’re doing something Pooch-related! :-)

Nice to hear it’s coming along so much to your liking. Congrats on getting your art through to Hollywood!

Hey! Isn’t that the Canada Cup in the background? Nice!

Ok, first and foremost, Paul, I actually have tears in my eyes! I am so very happy for you and your vision and hard work. And congratulations for having your talent noticed and appreciated by these creative movers and shakers.

Secondly, while I’m overjoyed, I’m not at all surprised. We’ve seen the entertainment value in Pooch Cafe for years. We love the characters and the stories amaze us and tickle us at every turn. Everyone else is just playing catch up. ;-) But it’s never too late to get a little Poncho in your life, so I am excited for everyone who has yet to discover this wonderful world we already love.

And thirdly, it is NOT ok to blow us off at anytime, even if you ARE doing something Pooch related, because many of us have an inner Poncho, so we were missing having our bellies rubbed and were getting separation anxiety! But mostly, because we’re your number one fans!!!

Love, hugs, and congrats! Your little guy seems to be headed for the big time. Can’t wait to hear about his adventures in being fitted for his red carpet tux. ;-)

    Paul,

Congratulations. I can only imagine the perils of dealing with Hollyweird, so any progress is ~good~ progress. :-) Looking forward to seeing your hard work on the movie.

Ah, Paul, I too have experienced “total immersion writing” and believe me, peeing is overrated! I’m sure the results will be worth the sacrifice ’cause it’s you and Poncho. I haven’t been this excited about a movie since the first Lord of the Rings!

I agree with Lulu, Belly rubs are missed and my wife’s shoes are destroyed, but hay we all have to have priorities. Any chance of having Russell Crowe doing Poncho Perry’s voice? That will have the Washington Post putting Poncho back into the print addition!!! Yhea…. If we let em!!!

    Keep in touch!

    Paul has a girlfriend? Nice!

She’s not a cat person is she? Orange sweaters?

Also, does the director have initials “JC” by any chance?

Thanks for the sweet responses, guy. Yes, so far the Hollywood experience has been remarkably nurturing, and everyone seems to very much like the concept of keeping Pooch Cafe “poochie.” Aw, Lulu, wipe those peepers! I hadn’t realized I’d been spending such significantly less time ’round here, I’ll try to make sure I buzz by more often. You guys are what keep things ticking.

Paul, I think you are doing a fine job of keeping the posts coming on this site while staying so busy. I can’t imagine trying to handle a movie along with the daily strip. That in itself is awesome. Congrats and I hope everything keeps moving along fine until we see Poncho on the big screen. It would be great if everyone could sit down with you some day over a cold beverage of choice and listen the stories you can probably tell about this whole process.

    Thumbs up!

It looks like Poncho was taking himself for a walk, or maybe Boomer was walking him, to buy a hotdog.

This is actually some art I did for the first pitch treatment, which has changed significantly, and this scene no longer exists in the current version. Poncho and Chazz lived in an apartment, Chazz was gone and Poncho needed to do his business, so was walking himself (hence the leash in his mouth). He meets street-smart Boomer, who convinces him to steal street vendor hotdogs. The vendor calls the dog catcher, who coalesces from the shadows like a wraith and begins chasing them. None of that is in the first draft any longer.
