Smear My Ears With Jam, It’s The Farm!

By Paul | July 5, 2012

What an amazing response to the choose-your-own-adventure, over 600 votes!  The victor won by a significant margin, Boat: 241, and Farm: 368!  So starting today, the Family Poncho will be gettin’ back to its roots.  There’ll be laughs, tears, and maybe they’ll just learn a thing or two about love.   Nah, just kiddin’.  Or am I?  (I think I am, I’ve lost track).

The above art courtesy of Pooch Blog mainstay, Lulu.  Nope, she didn’t have any insider information (despite her best efforts), she just took a stab.  And a nice one too, I reckon!

Lulu, would you autograph my Poncho: Year One book and draw a little sketch?

I’m looking forward to all that awaits the Family Poncho on their visit. Maybe a new character will emerge or perhaps Poncho will come across a sibling or two? Perhaps Sidney will appear since there are many pigeons on a farm. I guess time will tell and I’ll laugh all the way to the end.

Lulu, you should sell your artwork!

You guys are too funny! I’m not sure it would considered artwork as it’s a bit of a Frankenwork. I found a body watering and the arms and legs could pass for Poncho’s so I put his head and ears on it but I will admit, the whole vibe is very Ponchoesque.

The whole idea started simply because I wanted to see Poncho in overalls and Paul wouldn’t oblige.

Where’s Eddie Albert when you need him? “Greeeeen Acres is the place to be…” :D

Eddie Albert lived to nearly 100 years old, I believe.

Just last week the oldies channel began running Green Acres from the FIRST episode. Wow, for fans it was a real treat.

Of all the goofy 60′s shows, Green Acres was genius. I believe it was Matt Groening who said if there were no Green Acres there would be no Simpsons.

I can’t wait to see what mischief Poncho will get into on the farm. I mean, this could be weeks and weeks! Paul, any hints on how long of a storyline this will be?

Actually, the Beverly Hillbillies spawned Green Acres. Since country folk moving to the city was such a huge success, the networks decided to do a reverse show and put city folk into a country setting. I believe Arnold the pig was the smartest one on the show.

I loved the strip today of the rooster poking Poncho in the eye. Nothing like good 3 stooges humor to start the day.

Bob you’re right, and CBS should still be kicked for letting Fred Silverman pull their big “rural purge” back in 1970-71. They cancelled Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, The Beverly Hillbillies, Mayberry R.F.D., Lassie and a couple of others at the end of that season. Nowadays it’s all Snookie. {:-p

Gotta love the Rooster’s name in Saturday’s strip, too.

Yes, if anyone has the time, read what Doug is referring to in terms of canceling shows that were doing pretty well bc of what they thought was low-brow humor.

What I will say though is even though Green Acres was spawned from the other shows, it was completely in a class by itself. If you’ve only seen a couple of them or think it’s predictable, you must watch more of them. It was very clever and in so many ways it was way ahead of its time. Ironically it didn’t dummy down any of its material and the characters on the show were out of some sort of surreal dream.

I think my favorite part of the whole premise is that Lisa vehemently did not want to go (I just adore a penthouse view, dahling I love you but give me Park Avenue) yet, between she and Oliver, she was the one who completely fit in there. She understood what Arnold was saying among a bunch of other stuff only indigenous to “Hootersville” as she put it. I love the episodes where they work in the beginning credits into the dialogue and again, only Lisa sees it.

I’d actually love to own the whole set and watch from beginning to end.

P.s. Didn’t you just love Ralph and Alf?

I wonder if Pooch Cafe’s trip to the farm will be similar in terms of one of them fitting in asap?

If it was the boat… any chance Fish would have come along for the ride?
