Pooch reader Jason Fischbein told me recently that he remembered the first strip he read, published back in /05, and that after he read it he was hooked. “You literally make me laugh every morning, and for that I am grateful.”  Aw, shucks, Jason.

He asked if I might post the strip he recalled.  It’s sort of neat for me to think about a certain Pooch strip being a reader’s first, the one that got him/her interested in reading more.  This is Jason’s:

Poncho should do crossword puzzles. (Because he…knows plenty of cross words.) :D Yes, I stole that bit from Hank Ketcham’s Dennis the Menace talking about Mr. Wilson many years ago.

“My first” was the retracting leash story, c. May 2009. Don’t recall exactly which one, but somewhere near the start.

I think it’s very interesting that you’re interested in the first strip that sucked people in. It’s indelibly etched in my brain; Poncho hugs Boomer and their collars lock. When they’re freed, Poncho is STARK NAKED. I laughed my butt off and showed it to my husband, and we both commented extensively on how stylized it was drawn in addition to how funny it was. And we were hooked.

    Hey, Wendy. What’s cookin’?

I wish I remembered my first strip. Pooch Cafe’ just grew on me day by day as I like to read the comics in the newspaper, which we still get to this day. The Chicago Sun-Times has 3 pages and a color Sunday insert of comics so we’re pretty lucky. Little by little, Poncho SO reminded me of Archie, our beloved guy now in the heavens. That’s what hooked me good.

If I had to think back of some of the first I remember, I’d say it was the one where Poncho visits Santa at Christmastime and without any words, Poncho and Santa communicate about Jesus loving cats and Poncho is very disappointed to find out Jesus does indeed love cats.

I actually own that Santa one and Antony, I also own on in the retractable leash series. It was the one where Chazz’s secretary chirps him on the intercom to tell him he has a visitor in the retractable leash.

Great Sunday strip. Makes me wonder about the unwritten (or, perhaps actually written) rules about the usage of special characters as swear words in dailies…

I don’t know for sure what my first POOCH CAFE strip was, but the oldest one I have saved to my hard drive for posterity is dated 10/01/2003 (“Maybe he’s crying on the inside…”). Whenever I read that strip, I get one of those suppressed giggle-laughs, and I laugh so hard that I cry… but on the outside.
