Very First Pooch
By Paul | March 22, 2008

After marking strip number 3000 some folks wanted to check out strip number 1 for comparison. This strip isn’t the first Pooch I ever drew, or even the first Pooch I drew that was published, it was probably more like the 20th strip, but I liked it and thought it introduced the characters nicely so I tapped it for Launch Day. I’ve been meaning to post some of the early strips and character drawings from the pre-syndication design phase, which I’ll get to at some point. Poncho was a lot more scrappy in the early conception.

Oh, this is PERFECT! I’ve never seen dog-ness captured so well - the sly mockery of human hygiene, the flagrant grossness of eating the stew out of a plunger - brilliant!!! Thank you for giving us Pncho!

Happy Easter Paul. Thanks for putting this on the blog…it is really fun to see the early strip. Looking forward to the other early work. You really are making this blog such an enjoyable one….I look forward to it everyday, several times a day…between your entries and all the other bloggers there is always something exciting to see or hear about. Thanks again…Oh, and thanks for that baby storyline…it was cute. Glad that Poncho is still the center of attention in his little world.

I love the ‘Bwa ha ha ha’. It adds to the intent of the laugh. I noticed today’s laugh by Poncho was ‘Mwa ha ha ha’, which made it more sinister. It seems like another way you convey meaning without word speech. Ironic that both strips appear together on todays date. You leave me ‘Wa ha ha ha’-ing every day. Thanks.

It is amazing how much different there is between a “ha ha ha”, a “bwa ha ha” and a “mwa ha ha,” isn’t it? You can convey so much difference in the way you read it to by varying the size of the laugh, sguiggling the word balloon, and of course the size of the character’s mouth. I love the subtleties of the language of comics.

That is one of my top 10 favs. When I want to introduce ppl to Pooch Cafe, that’s always the one I use.
Love the small nuances in the word play that makes such a big difference!
3000 I hope is just the tip, I mean, Poncho didn’t even start kindergarten yet!

Pooch Cafe is now added to the short list of things which must out live me, including my children and social security. Thanks.
