Pooch Café hits 5000th Strip!

By Paul | September 10, 2013

Holy snap.  I can feel the bones in my drawing hand creaking.  I had to do the calculation three times.  I had to use an abacus, because apparently those were all the rage around the time I started drawing this strip, which debuted on Jan 3, 2000, (“The first strip of the new millennium”, I coined it). It coincided relatively closely with Charles Schulz’s announcement that he was retiring Peanuts, and I was quickly misquoted in a newspaper interview as calling Poncho “the new Snoopy.”  My first reporter twisting of words!  I had entered the public eye.

The first strip:

Thanks to Copley Syndicate for starting me off, and to John Glynn, Lee Salem and John McMeel for taking Pooch on at Universal and helping me into the big leagues.  And of course thanks to all my fans over the years, without whom I’d have been committed because sitting by yourself doing 5000 comics about a dog for no one will get you tossed in a padded room.

Onward!

Congratulations Paul! The strip is still as fresh and funny as when you started. I am reminded of this song with a few words switched:
I would draw 5000 strips and I would draw 5000 more just to be the man who draws 10000 strips that land down at your door Da da da da …..

Awesome! The first strip was great and Pooch Cafe continues to be the best comic out there. Keep up the good work.

Congratulations, Paul. Promise you won’t check out the same day as your last strip appears way off in the future. (Another reference to Charles M. Schulz.) Lulu would turn your homestead into the next Graceland. ;)

(It’s already in the blueprint stages. ;-) )

Wow, that was the FIRST strip? You didn’t even need to find your comfort zone! It was perfection from day one!

And yeah, PC has never ever jumped the shark. Akin to The Simpsons, one of the greatest cartoons, which keeps us laughing and keeps me amazed at the bottomless pit of material, hats off to you, our favorite Canadian or any “ian” cartoonist and comic strip of all time.

Congratulations, Paul. What a wonderful accomplishment for you and Doug, I cannot even bear the thought of the last PC strip. It takes me to that O. Henry story called The Last Leaf. I’m ascared.

OMG… that was the first strip? No kidding I was instantly hooked.

Will you make it to the likes of Herman, Peanuts? I don’t know but you’re certainly on your way and I do hope you make it. Your cartoons make me laugh which is one of the most precious things in life.

Congratulations Paul…no matter how bad the day, a daily dose of Pooch Café makes us laugh out loud..here’s to 5,000 plus more. By the way, the NY Daily News is at it again…you are in there for two weeks in place of Zits-off on their vacation..You’d think if you are the place to go to, why not just carry you full time? Anyway, we are all so proud to know you and own some of the strips…congrats
