First Pics From Poncho’s Travels

By Paul | September 25, 2008

KANSAS CITY

Below are the pics of Poncho at the commencement of his journey, taken by the good folks at Universal Press Syndicate in Kansas City just prior to Poncho’s departure for sunny Venezuela.  Here he is in front of  the J.C. Nichols Memorial Fountain, by Henri-Léon Gréber (1910, reinstalled in Kansas City and dedicated in 1960), at the corner of 18th and Vine, and enjoying a barbeque at the world famous Arthur Bryant’s Restaurant.

I’m glad he never got sloppy around all that barbeque!

Was he actually enjoying the barbecue, or was the person across the table from him saying “Quit mooching.”?

Am I the only one who finds it absolutely SPOOKY just how much the plush matches the cartoon? I know I’ve already brought this up, but holy crap…every time I see one of those pictures, model Poncho just looks EXACTLY like the strip version. I’m not sure who impresses me more…Paul for designing a very stylized character who nevertheless translates so well into 3D, or the stuffed Poncho creator for doing a 3D model that so closely matches a stylized cartoon character. Or is it both?

He looks fab and real and there’s no doubt he’s having an excellent time. I am so looking forward to my turn to show him around, and to seeing the pictures of his visits to other places. Mailman’s comment reminds me of a really crucial question: Is Plush Poncho washable?

I was thinking I would prepare a piece of clear plastic and set him down on every time he poses for a photo, but accidents could still happen.

I plan to appoint a Poncho overseer to hold him as I photograph him to eliminate opportunities for grime. I just hope he doesn’t run into any “Fur is murder!” people.

It really is quite amazing, better than I expected so far! He sure does look pristine white, there are indeed washing instructions, they’re specific but simple. I imagine we don’t want to wash him too often, might make him “dog eared”. So hopefully he’ll stay out of the mud as much as possible. I can’t wait to meet him, apparently he’s on his way to me this very moment.

Hi, Lynn here. I included 2 pieces of translucent plastic that can be used to set him on in dirty areas. He is super lightweight, so be very careful not to let him blow away in breezy areas.

Good cautionary comment Lynn, I’ve heard of things being a tiny breezy at the windy city, but here in Washington DC with all our hot air being blown lately, if not carful could be blown to the Kremlin, or even worse, Wall Street! I would hate to think our hero Poncho Perry being in need of a Bailout.

Wouldn’t it be great to have Poncho pics of him at a zoo so he could get as close to a zebra as he would ever be?

Fyshe, I’m with you on how eerily close Poncho looks to the strip! Lynn! Unbelievable!!!

Those pictures are just great and I’m so excited about this project! We’re all going to have great fun with this!

    :-D

Poncho looks fabulous “on location” and yes, it is kinda spooky; like suddenly the whole strip is alive in 3D. I like the pictures of KC. Somebody is a really good photog. I didn’t know KC was such a pretty place. I can’t wait for my turn, either.

The photography work is indeed top shelf, and was done by Universal’s own Blake Stevens. Cudos from all, Blake, on making Poncho look so Rico Suave.

I am suddenly hungry for BBQ.

I HAD BBQ for lunch!! I didn’t even think about it. It’s 100 degrees outside here, so BBQ was not an obvious choice. I’m sure it’s mind control from Poncho Perry. Now I know the reason for this trip–it is to make us Poncho slaves; to do his bidding! Well, I’m game. :-D
